On the evening of 16 Nov, the Giant Lanterns of China returned to Edinburgh Zoo. Chinese Consul General Pan Xinchun, Chair of The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) Jeremy Peat and other guests attended the launching ceremony.
Chair Peat said that Edinburgh Zoo had enjoyed a even stronger ties with China and fruitful cooperation in giant panda conservation work and specialist Confucius Classroom Hub since it successfully hosted the Giant Lantern show for the first time last year. The show of this year, as a significant part of Chinese New Year celebrations, would deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese and Scottish people.
Consul General Pan expressed congratulations on the opening of the Giant Lantern Show, saying that China-Scotland relationships were flourishing as both sides relished the rich programs of cultural exchanges. These awe-inspiring Chinese lanterns marked the beginning of the upcoming Chinese New Year celebrations, making Edinburgh more festive and enhancing Scottish people’s understanding of Chinese culture.
In partnership with the Confucius Institute for Scotland of University of Edinburgh, RZSS Edinburgh Zoo is home to the Giant Lanterns of China, an installation of over 450 dazzling lanterns that illuminate the Zoo between 16 Nov 2018 to 17 Feb 2019. Chinese craftsmen from Zigong, Sichuan have created an incredible trail featuring Chinese and British myths and legends. Monkey King, Nessie the Loch Ness Monster and unicorns are among the creatures on display in the event.
Edinburgh Tourism Action Group(ETAG) is to stage 2019 Chinese New Year Festival as weeks of special events and promotions will be held across the city under a new phase of China-Ready Initiative. It is hoped that key buildings across the city will be lit up red and high streets be decorated to mark the festivities while other special events will be held at the Usher Hall, Royal Botanic Garden and Edinburgh Zoo. ETAG is aimed at raising greater awareness of the Chinese New Year and facilitating exchanges and collaborations between two sides.
